A Short
History of Pilates

When delving into the history of Pilates, the name that springs to the forefront of the mind is none other than its founder; Joseph Pilates.

Pilates was an innovative Health and Fitness Guru. He appreciated the connection man had between the mind and body and was concerned with humanity’s constant neglect of physical and mental health.

Joseph Pilates was born a frail child and was prone to illness. Inspiring him to find ways to improve his own physical health.  This inturn became what the phenomenon it is today.

With success stemming back more than 80 years, Pilates has constantly grown in popularity to become one the world’s most successful exercise regimes of today.

What makes it so popular is people of all ages and varying abilities can attend a workout and see, feel and have improvements right before there very own eyes...

What the Clients say - After Just One Session

When asked how people feel after just there first Pilates session, people described sensations such as:

  1. Lengthened
  2. Balanced
  3. Strengthened
  4. Energized
  5. And also... Completely knackered!

A short History of Pilates will challenge your mind, a Pilates Exercise Regime will change your life...

In Joseph Pilates own words...

“In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 sessions you will see the difference and in 30 you will have a new body”

History of Pilates - Where the inspiration emerged from

Pilates studied many different Health and Fitness related regimes including gymnastics, diving, boxing, weight lifting and self defense. He had a great undertanding of Chinese Martial Arts, including Kung Fu and Qi Qong.

Putting together the experiences of the different health-related arts, noting they all promoted health through flexibility, strength, mental balance and a strong core centre.

Adding to these experiences Pilates also studied the movement of animals and there instinctive behaviours; to maintain a strong and able existence.

Lastly, he also studied children and babies discovering how early on muscle deformaties and weaknesses started. From this experience it also inspired Pilates to find such ways these deformities could be treated and repaired - from an early stage in a child's development.
