Inspirational Story

A Senior Exercise Story of inspiration… 

You can do ANYTHING You Put Your Mind to…

For all my life my Nanna took care of me, I mean I have a mum and dad ; but my nan just took care of me… I’m pretty sure it was wisdom through many lessons learnt. But as a kid my Nanna looked out for me, and even to this day she still sees her first grandson as her first baby boy.

So after years of slipping me some extra coin, making sure I enjoyed life. Being the greatest listener and just generally being the happy smiling rock in the family. I find myself wanting to repay the favour... 

I’ve been a Personal Trainer for over 8 years, trained my Mum and Dad; but never thought I had the power to make a difference in my Nanna’s life…

Boy was I wrong…


You see I’m very passionate about fitness (hence the website!) and even more so I see how fitness is making a huge difference to the elderly and senior people in our community. They truly are reaping the benefits of exercise… 

So after Procrastinating for a good 7 years that I could never make a difference in my Nan’s life, during which I moved 3000km away from my entire family, I honestly thought that all hope was lost…

Last September I decided I was going to put together a plan and slowly feed the idea of exercise to my nanna. Come Christmas I would give her the greatest gift of all…

A voucher for x5 Personal Pilates sessions…

Now let me assure you this was going to be no easy task. My Nan cringes at the thought of exercise! I mean utterly despises it! My family didn’t back me (except my little brother) they told me I was crazy and that my Nan wouldn’t never go for it!

But these words only stirred me to become more determined…

I searched through my many books about exercise, the elderly, etc. Until I found articles that showed the ‘cold hard facts,’ the facts that are truly scary and no-one want’s to see.

As hard as this was I realised that my would need a good jolt, a loving grandson and postivity... Together the three was an unstopppable combination. 

This was going to work not only for the short term but the long-term.

Now I should also tell you my Nanna is still quite young at just 75. But still on the verge of joining the majority of people that suffer from Osteoporosis, Heat disease, diabetes type I & II, this list could go on forever…

My Nanna would always be the one playing with us in the backyard, kicking the football around, playing cricket til the sun goes down…

The last thing I want is to see my Nan fall into the trap of one of those elderly people that do NOTHING & get worse as everyday goes by.



So I began a marketing plan…
Firstly I wrote her a letter, explaining to her most of what is written above, then I proceeded to put together a ‘Marketing Plan' titled…

Get my Nan fit!

6 Months Later...

I report back that this has been a life changing event for my Nan. She now attends 2x Pilates sessions per week. She has bought some home exercise equipment and strength trains 2x per week. 

The Beginner Program is definately the best place to start as this was the first place that my Nanna started with. 

She is becoming more and more flexible, more stronger, and most importantly is shaving years off her life! 

Her bones are strong, if she has to - she can handle a fall. She is stable and getting stronger as each exciting new day passes!

Even better… She has made a fantastic social group with like minded people that want to take care of themselves...

She is excited about life again and more importantly is going to continue live HEALTHIER & HAPPIER  for the experience…!

In Conclusion

I’ll be completely honest with you… This was not easy… To start off I had with negativity from family members. I came close to throwing in the towel. 

But I trusted my instinct… Followed through with my action plan and I do not think I have ever seen my Nan happier and more excited to tell me about her experiences before!

Now when I bring my grandkids home to Nanna she’s not going to be what 95% of elderly people enable themselves to get into… A lazy state, unhealthy, weak state…

From my research and now personal experience if you are someone or know someone that is letting age get to them, SOMETHING is better then nothing…

If you do not have any grandparents left… use this information to spur YOURSELF on or pass it on to someone that needs it. Someone that you know and care about that may have someone in there life that could be about to join the 95% of the population…

Do something with this information, help us increase the 5% of elderly people that actually live fit and fulfilling lives all the way through…

These are supposed out golden years!! Why spend it cursing ‘old age’ don’t let the old person crawl under your skin or anyone you love!
