Spotter Guidelines and Techniques
- The
person lifting the weight does not need
that much help. You will be surprised what one finger can
do.
- The
person lifting the weight does
not need your help all the way
through the set, instead, normally through the sticky point. This
is the middle
of any full rep.
- It
is better to Help Less then more... You can
always add to your help. Whereas if you go in all guns blazing the
person lifting will feel like
you lifted the weight for them.
When
helping with Chest workouts DO NOT hold under the elbows:
This is very
dangerous. If the weight lifter is going to drop the weights, it will
go one of two ways:
- The
weight will go towards their own face/head.
- The
weight will go towards the ground and they will lose control and hurt
there wrists or shoulders.
If
the
spotter is spotting by 'holding
or helping' under the elbows they will only
succeed in helping the weights go faster towards one of the above worst
case scenarios! Therefore
hold by the wrists.
- Holding
by the wrists: The spotter can help
with just the thumb and index finger placed on the weight lifters
wrists.
This is usually enough but aware if they suddenly cannot lift the
weight you are there to catch and help the entire time.
- Lastly
the spotter must know how many repetitions the weight lifter
is going
for. He must make sure the person lifting gets there... No matter
what.
- Last
but not least: The
spotter must carry
breath mints AT ALL TIMES. When the weight lifter is
exhaling things
can get quite stinky...
Don't say you weren't warned!!
